Did you know that the original lyrics to 12 Days of Christmas said 4 colly birds not 4 calling birds? I just recently found this out, thanks to Wikipedia. Turns out colly birds is a more fancy name for blackbirds. The song is over 150 years old, so I guess some modernization was bound to happen – hence the more modern version referring to calling birds.
I decided to go ahead & use calling birds on my coloring pages — I figured what’s the fun in coloring the birds black? It sounds a lot more fun to me to color each bird a different color. However, my girls might think differently (they both colored all 3 french hens pink on their pages yesterday – although one did end up with blue polka dots afterwards).
